Ciprocin mainly contains ciprofloxacin, a potent, broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the second-generation fluoroquinolone class, widely used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting the enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair; by preventing these processes, the medication effectively causes bacterial cell death. Clinically, it is frequently prescribed for urinary tract infections (UTIs), respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and certain types of infectious diarrhea, as well as being a primary treatment for exposure to anthrax. While highly effective against many Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria, its use is increasingly restricted to more severe infections due to the risk of serious side effects, such as tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects. Additionally, it should be avoided or used with extreme caution in children, pregnant women, and the elderly to minimize the risk of musculoskeletal complications.
