Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic agent belonging to the benzimidazole class, primarily used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infestations, including neurocysticercosis and hydatid disease. It functions by inhibiting the polymerization of tubulin, which interferes with the microtubule-mediated uptake of glucose by the parasite; this leads to glycogen depletion, ATP exhaustion, and the eventual death of the worm. Unlike some other anthelmintics, albendazole is effective against both the larval and adult stages of nematodes, cestodes, and trematodes. Because its systemic absorption is significantly enhanced when taken with a fatty meal, it is a versatile choice for both intestinal and systemic infections.
