Indications
Utal is used before surgery for the treatment of moderate to severe symptoms of uterine fibroids (non-cancerous tumors of the uterus) in adult women who have not yet reached menopause.
It helps reduce:
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Anemia due to blood loss
Pelvic or abdominal pain
Fibroid size
Pharmacology
Ulipristal acetate is a Selective Progesterone Receptor Modulator (SPRM).
It works by blocking the action of progesterone, a hormone that may promote fibroid growth. As a result:
Fibroid cells stop growing
Some fibroid cells die
Fibroid size decreases
Bleeding and symptoms improve
Dosage & Administration
Recommended dose: 5 mg once daily
Duration: Up to 3 months
Treatment should start during the first week of menstruation
A second 3-month course may be given once if needed
Take orally with or without food.
Contraindications
Do NOT use in:
Pregnancy
Breastfeeding
Allergy to Ulipristal acetate
Unexplained genital bleeding
Uterine, cervical, ovarian, or breast cancer
Common Side Effects
Hot flush
Headache
Endometrial thickening
Uterine bleeding changes
Temporary absence of menstruation (amenorrhea)
Precautions & Warnings
Pregnancy
Pregnancy must be excluded before starting treatment.
Contraception
Use a non-hormonal contraceptive method during treatment because hormonal contraceptives may interact with the medicine.
Bleeding Pattern
Most women experience reduced bleeding within about 10 days. If heavy bleeding continues, consult a doctor.
Endometrial Changes
Temporary thickening of the uterine lining can occur and usually returns to normal after treatment ends.
Asthma
Use cautiously in severe asthma patients using oral steroids.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category X
Contraindicated during pregnancy
Not recommended during breastfeeding because the drug passes into breast milk
