Indications:It is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria including pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, gonorrhoea, typhoid fever, Lyme disease, meningitis, and bone & joint infections.Pharmacology:Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. It is stable against many β-lactamase enzymes and is effective against various ampicillin and amoxicillin-resistant bacteria.Dosage:Adults: Usually 250-500 mg twice daily depending on infection type and severity.Children: 20-30 mg/kg/day in divided doses.Severe infections may require IV/IM administration. Dose and duration vary according to infection.Administration:Freshly reconstituted solution is recommended. It remains stable for 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours under refrigeration.Interaction:No significant drug interactions have been reported.Contraindications:Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.Side Effects:Common side effects include rash, nausea, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Prolonged use may lead to fungal overgrowth such as Candida.Pregnancy & Lactation:Pregnancy category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefuroxime is excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised during breastfeeding.Precautions & Warnings:Use cautiously in patients with a history of colitis or those receiving potent diuretics. Cross-reactivity may occur in penicillin-allergic patients.Therapeutic Class:Second generation CephalosporinsReconstitution:For IM injection: Add 3 ml water for injection to 750 mg vial.For IV injection: Add 8 ml water for injection to 750 mg vial or 16 ml to 1.5 g vial and inject slowly over 3-5 minutes.Storage Conditions:Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
