Product Description

 Indications

• Respiratory Tract Infections: Lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia) and upper respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis).

• Other Infections: Otitis media (middle ear infection), skin and soft tissue infections, and typhoid fever.

• Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs): Non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.

Dosage & Administration

• Adults (Oral): 500 mg once daily for 3 days; OR 500 mg on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on Days 2–5.

• STDs (Chlamydia): 1 g as a single dose (or 500 mg on Day 1, then 250 mg daily for 2 days).

• Typhoid Fever: 500 mg once daily for 7–10 days.

• Children (Oral Suspension): 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days.

o 15–25 kg: 200 mg (1 teaspoonful) daily for 3 days.

o 26–35 kg: 300 mg (1.5 teaspoonfuls) daily for 3 days.

o 36–45 kg: 400 mg (2 teaspoonfuls) daily for 3 days.

• Administration: Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Reconstitute suspension powder with boiled and cooled water up to the mark and shake well before use.

Side Effects

• Mostly mild-to-moderate gastrointestinal symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain/cramps, diarrhea, loose stools, and flatulence.

• Allergic reactions (skin rash, photosensitivity, rarely severe hypersensitivity/anaphylaxis).

• Reversible elevation in liver transaminases, rare cases of cholestatic jaundice, and temporary hearing impairment with prolonged high doses.

Drug Interactions

• Antacids: Take Azithromycin at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids.

• Ergot Derivatives: Co-administration is contraindicated due to the risk of ergotism.

• Digoxin, Cyclosporin, & Warfarin: Require caution and proper monitoring of drug levels/prothrombin time when used concurrently.

Contraindications & Precautions

• Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or any macrolide antibiotic, hepatic (liver) diseases, and co-administration with ergot derivatives.

• Precautions: Use with caution in patients with severe renal (kidney) impairment. Discontinue immediately if severe allergic reactions (e.g., angioedema, anaphylaxis) occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category B: Should be used during pregnancy only if adequate alternatives are not available.

• Lactation: Caution should be exercised as it is not known whether azithromycin is secreted in human breast milk.
