Indications (Uses)
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including:
• Respiratory Infections: Bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis.
• Ear & Skin Infections: Middle ear infections (otitis media) and soft tissue infections.
• Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
• Typhoid Fever.
Dosage & Administration
• Adults (Oral):
o 500 mg once daily for 3 days; OR 500 mg on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on Days 2–5.
o Chlamydia STDs: 1 gram as a single dose (or 500 mg on Day 1, then 250 mg daily for 2 days).
o Typhoid Fever: 500 mg once daily for 7–10 days.
• Children (Oral): 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days.
o 15–25 kg: 200 mg (1 tsp) daily for 3 days.
o 26–35 kg: 300 mg (1.5 tsp) daily for 3 days.
o 36–45 kg: 400 mg (2 tsp) daily for 3 days.
• How to Take:
o Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
o For liquid suspension: Shake powder to loosen, add boiled and cooled water up to the mark, and shake well before use.
Side Effects
• Common (Gastrointestinal): Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea/loose stools, abdominal pain, and flatulence.
• Less Common/Severe: Allergic reactions (skin rash, sensitivity to light, swelling), temporary elevation of liver enzymes, cholestatic jaundice, or temporary hearing loss (with high, prolonged doses).
Drug Interactions
• Antacids: Do not take antacids within 2 hours of taking Azithromycin.
• Ergot Derivatives: Co-administration is strictly contraindicated.
• Digoxin, Cyclosporin, & Warfarin: Require caution and careful monitoring by a doctor when taken together.
Precautions & Contraindications
• Contraindicated in: Patients allergic to macrolide antibiotics or those with severe liver (hepatic) disease.
• Special Caution: Use with caution in patients with severe kidney impairment. Stop taking immediately and seek emergency medical help if you experience swelling of the face/throat, severe itching, or breathing difficulties.
Pregnancy & Lactation
• Pregnancy (Category B): Animal studies show no harm, but human studies are limited. Use only if clearly needed and recommended by a doctor.
• Lactation: Exercise caution, as it is unknown if the drug passes into human breast milk.
