Beklo, which contains Baclofen, is a potent muscle relaxant and antispastic agent that functions as a selective agonist of the gamma-aminobutyric acid-B receptors in the central nervous system. By binding to these receptors at the spinal cord level, it inhibits the release of excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate and aspartate, thereby suppressing the hyperactive monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes that cause muscle stiffness. Clinically, it is the gold-standard treatment for managing severe chronic spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, or cerebral palsy, helping to improve muscle mobility and reduce associated pain. Baclofen can be administered orally or, in severe cases, via an intrathecal pump directly into the spinal fluid to minimize systemic side effects. Common adverse effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and muscle weakness; importantly, the medication must be tapered gradually, as abrupt discontinuation can lead to serious withdrawal symptoms, including hallucinations, tachycardia, or seizures.
