Product Description

Indications:

Rabivax is used for prevention of rabies (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and for treatment after suspected rabies exposure (post-exposure prophylaxis). It is recommended for high-risk individuals such as veterinarians and others frequently exposed to animals.

Pharmacology:

Rabivax is an inactivated rabies vaccine produced on Vero cells. After reconstitution, it forms a sterile, clear solution for intramuscular injection that stimulates immunity against the rabies virus.

Dosage and Administration:

The vaccine is given as a 1 mL intramuscular injection in the deltoid (adults) or thigh (infants). Do not inject into the gluteal region or intravenously.

Pre-exposure: Doses on Day 0, Day 7 and Day 21/28, followed by booster after 1 year, then every 5 years if needed.

Post-exposure (non-immunized): Standard schedule on Days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28, or abbreviated schedule (2-1-1). Wound should be washed thoroughly and rabies immunoglobulin given in severe cases.

Previously immunized: Booster doses on Day 0 and Day 3 may be sufficient depending on history.

Drug Interactions:

Immunosuppressive drugs or corticosteroids may reduce vaccine effectiveness.

Contraindications:

For pre-exposure use, avoid in severe illness, fever or hypersensitivity. There are no absolute contraindications in post-exposure cases due to the fatal nature of rabies.

Side Effects:

Common effects include pain, redness and swelling at injection site. Other reactions may include fever, dizziness, nausea, rash and mild allergic reactions.

Pregnancy and Lactation:

Can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding when needed, especially after exposure, as rabies is life-threatening.

Precautions and Warnings:

Do not administer intravenously. Do not mix vaccine with immunoglobulin in the same syringe or injection site. Use immediately after reconstitution and follow proper storage conditions.

Therapeutic Class:

Vaccine (Anti-rabies)

Storage Conditions:

Store and transport at 2°C–8°C, protect from light, do not freeze, and keep out of reach of children.
