Ferric citrate is an iron-based compound that serves a dual purpose in clinical medicine, primarily utilized in the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD). When taken orally with meals, it functions effectively as a phosphate binder; the ferric iron binds to dietary phosphate in the GI tract, forming insoluble complexes that are excreted in the feces, thereby helping to control hyperphosphatemia.
