Ambrox is a potent systemic mucolytic agent and secretolytic therapy used to treat acute and chronic bronchopulmonary diseases associated with abnormal mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport. It acts by increasing the proportion of serous bronchial secretion and stimulating surfactant production, which reduces the viscosity of phlegm and enhances the ciliary activity of the respiratory epithelium. This process, known as mucociliary clearance, makes it easier for the patient to expectorate trapped mucus, thereby easing cough and improving airflow. Beyond its primary mucolytic effect, ambroxol also exhibits mild local anesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties, providing additional symptomatic relief for sore throats and irritated airways.
