Indications:
Bukof is used to relieve dry (non-productive) cough, including cough due to viral infections, acute respiratory conditions (tracheitis, laryngitis, bronchitis), whooping cough, and pre/post-operative cough. It is also used for cough suppression during procedures like bronchoscopy.
Pharmacology:
Butamirate Citrate acts directly on the brain’s cough center to suppress cough. It is non-opioid and non-sedating. It is rapidly absorbed, highly protein-bound, and has a half-life of about 13 hours. Its metabolites also contribute to cough suppression.
Dosage and Administration:
Adults:
Tablet (50 mg): 2–3 tablets daily
Syrup: 15 ml, 4 times daily
Children:
3–6 years: 5 ml syrup, 3 times daily
6–12 years: 10 ml syrup, 3 times daily
Adolescents: 15 ml syrup, 3 times daily or 1–2 tablets daily
Drops:
2 months–1 year: 0.5 ml, 4 times daily
1–3 years: 0.75 ml, 4 times daily
Drug Interactions:
Avoid use with expectorants as it may lead to mucus retention and complications.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Butamirate Citrate.
Side Effects:
Generally well tolerated. Rare side effects include rash, nausea, diarrhea and dizziness.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
Avoid use in the first trimester. Use cautiously in later pregnancy if prescribed. Safety during breastfeeding is not well established.
Precautions and Warnings:
Do not use with expectorants. If cough persists for more than 7 days (or 3 days in children), consult a doctor.
Overdose Effects:
Overdose may cause drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and low blood pressure. Supportive treatment is required.
