Lamotrigine is a versatile anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing medication primarily used in the management of epilepsy and the maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder. Its primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels, which stabilizes neuronal membranes and suppresses the excessive release of excitatory neurotransmitters, most notably glutamate. This unique profile makes it effective for a broad range of seizure types, including focal and generalized seizures, as well as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In the context of psychiatry, lamotrigine is particularly valued for its ability to delay the occurrence of mood episodes—specifically depression—in patients with bipolar disorder, without typically causing the weight gain or sedation associated with other stabilizers.
