Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd.Product Description
Consucon, which contains gliclazide, is an oral hypoglycemic medication belonging to the second-generation sulfonylurea class, specifically used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by stimulating the beta-cells of the pancreas to release insulin; it achieves this by binding to specific sulfonylurea receptors on the pancreatic cell surface, which triggers a sequence of events leading to increased insulin secretion. This makes it particularly effective in patients who still have some residual pancreatic function. Beyond its primary glucose-lowering effect, gliclazide is noted for its potential "extrapancreatic" benefits, such as improving peripheral insulin sensitivity and exhibiting certain antioxidant properties that may protect the vasculature. It is often favored within its class due to a lower risk of severe hypoglycemia compared to older sulfonylureas like glibenclamide. Common side effects include gastrointestinal upset and weight gain, and it is generally avoided in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment or those with type 1 diabetes.
