Product Description

Emazid (Empagliflozin): Emazid is an SGLT2 (Sodium-Glucose Co-transporter-2) inhibitor indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. It works by inhibiting renal glucose reabsorption, thereby increasing urinary glucose excretion, lowering blood glucose levels, and also promoting weight loss and blood pressure reduction. The recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily in the morning, with or without food, which may be increased to 25 mg once daily if tolerated. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to empagliflozin, severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or those undergoing dialysis. Common adverse effects include urinary tract infections, genital fungal infections, dehydration, hypotension, dizziness, weakness, increased urination, and increased thirst. Emazid may interact with diuretics (increasing the risk of dehydration), insulin or insulin secretagogues (increasing the risk of hypoglycemia), and may interfere with urine glucose tests and 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) assays, making these tests unreliable for monitoring glycemic control. Renal function should be assessed before starting therapy and monitored periodically, and the drug should not be initiated in patients with an eGFR below 45 mL/min/1.73 m². It should be used with caution during pregnancy and is not recommended during breastfeeding. In case of overdose, supportive treatment should be provided, although the effectiveness of hemodialysis for drug removal has not been established. Emazid should be stored below 30°C, protected from light and moisture, and kept out of the reach of children.
