Product Description

Indications:Divastin is used along with diet to reduce high cholesterol (total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides) and increase HDL. It is indicated in familial hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia and dysbetalipoproteinemia. It is also used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack in patients with coronary artery disease and in patients with diabetes or post-transplant hyperlipidemia.Pharmacology:Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver and increases LDL receptor activity, leading to lower LDL levels. It is rapidly absorbed, highly protein-bound and extensively metabolized in the liver, with active metabolites contributing to its effect.Dosage and Administration:Adults usually start with 10–20 mg once daily, which may be increased up to 80 mg depending on response. Patients needing greater LDL reduction may start at 40 mg.Children (10–18 years): start with 10 mg daily, maximum 20 mg.It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. Lipid levels should be monitored and dose adjusted every 2–4 weeks.Drug Interactions:Risk of muscle toxicity increases with cyclosporine, fibrates, niacin, erythromycin and azole antifungals. Antacids may reduce drug levels. Atorvastatin may increase levels of digoxin and oral contraceptives. Use caution with CYP3A4 inhibitors.Contraindications:Contraindicated in active liver disease, unexplained elevated liver enzymes, hypersensitivity to the drug or previous serious reaction to statins. Also contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.Side Effects:Common side effects include constipation, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, headache and muscle pain. Rarely, myopathy or liver enzyme elevation may occur.Pregnancy and Lactation:Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential harm to the fetus or infant.Precautions and Warnings:Monitor liver function before and during treatment. Use cautiously in patients with liver disease or high alcohol intake. Discontinue if muscle pain or significantly elevated CPK occurs.Overdose Effects:No specific antidote. Management is supportive with monitoring of liver function and muscle enzymes. Hemodialysis is not effective.Therapeutic Class:Statin (HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor)Storage Conditions:Store in a cool, dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.⚠️ Use under the advice of a registered healthcare professional.
