Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), also known as ursodiol, is a naturally occurring bile acid used therapeutically to treat various hepatobiliary disorders. It functions by decreasing the cholesterol content of bile and inhibiting intestinal cholesterol absorption, which facilitates the gradual dissolution of radiolucent gallstones in patients with a functioning gallbladder. Beyond its litholytic properties, UDCA exerts cytoprotective and immunomodulatory effects by displacing more toxic, hydrophobic bile acids from the liver, making it a primary treatment for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and other cholestatic liver diseases. While typically well-tolerated, common side effects include diarrhea and gastrointestinal discomfort, and its efficacy depends on long-term, consistent administration.
