Indications:
Faropen is used to treat various bacterial infections including respiratory infections (bronchitis, pneumonia), ENT infections (sinusitis, otitis), urinary tract infections, skin infections, gynecological infections, and upper respiratory infections like tonsillitis and pharyngitis.
Pharmacology:
Faropenem is a penem antibiotic with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), making it effective against both Gram-positive, Gram-negative and anaerobic bacteria.
Dosage and Administration:
Dose depends on infection type:
Typically 150–200 mg three times daily, may increase up to 300 mg three times daily if needed.
Follow physician’s advice for exact dosing.
Drug Interactions:
May interact with imipenem-cilastatin (increase drug levels), furosemide (increase kidney toxicity), and sodium valproate (reduce valproate levels leading to seizures).
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to faropenem or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is excreted in breast milk, so use cautiously during breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with allergy history, renal impairment, elderly patients and those with poor nutritional status. Dose adjustment may be required in kidney disease.
Use in Special Populations:
Elderly patients may require lower doses due to reduced kidney function. Monitor closely for side effects.
Overdose Effects:
No specific antidote. Treatment is supportive and drug should be discontinued.
