Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic primarily used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria and certain strains of aerobic Gram-positive cocci, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. It exerts its bacteriostatic effect by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Clindamycin is frequently utilized for skin and soft tissue infections, dental infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease, and it serves as a valuable alternative for patients allergic to penicillin. However, its use is notably associated with a risk of Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD), as it can significantly disrupt the normal intestinal flora, leading to pseudomembranous colitis.
