Fixocard contains the fixed-dose combination of Amlodipine and Atenolol, which is a synergistic antihypertensive therapy that effectively manages high blood pressure and chronic stable angina by targeting the cardiovascular system through two distinct mechanisms. Amlodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, promotes peripheral vasodilation by inhibiting calcium influx into vascular smooth muscle, which reduces systemic vascular resistance and lowers blood pressure. Atenolol, a cardioselective beta-1 blocker, complements this by reducing heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output, thereby decreasing the oxygen demand of the heart. This combination is particularly beneficial because the beta-blocker component (Atenolol) helps to suppress the reflex tachycardia that can sometimes be triggered by the vasodilatory effects of the calcium channel blocker (Amlodipine). While highly effective for long-term blood pressure control and reducing the workload on the heart, patients must be monitored for side effects such as bradycardia, hypotension, and peripheral edema, and the medication should never be discontinued abruptly to avoid rebound hypertension or worsening of angina.
