Cephradine is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity against many Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria. It functions by inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the disruption of the peptidoglycan layer and eventual bacterial cell lysis. Its antimicrobial profile is particularly effective against organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus (including penicillinase-producing strains) and Streptococcus pneumoniae, making it a common choice for treating respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections. A notable pharmacokinetic feature of cephradine is its high stability and nearly complete absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, which is unaffected by the presence of food.
