Product Description

Indications:

Filofer is used for the treatment of iron deficiency in adults.

Pharmacology:

Ferric maltol provides iron for absorption through the intestinal wall and transport via transferrin and ferritin. It helps increase iron levels in the body, including ferritin and transferrin saturation.

Dosage and Administration:

The recommended dose is 30 mg twice daily, taken orally on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals). Capsules should be swallowed whole without chewing or breaking. Treatment usually continues for at least 12 weeks or until iron levels return to normal. Safety in children has not been established.

Drug Interactions:

Avoid use with dimercaprol due to risk of toxicity. Filofer may reduce absorption of certain drugs such as mycophenolate, oral contraceptives, ciprofloxacin and doxycycline; maintain at least a 4-hour gap. Food may reduce iron absorption.

Contraindications:

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ferric maltol, iron overload conditions (e.g., hemochromatosis), or those receiving repeated blood transfusions.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, dark stools, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.

Pregnancy and Lactation:

Systemic absorption is minimal, so fetal or infant exposure is unlikely. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is generally considered safe, but data are limited.

Precautions and Warnings:

Avoid in active inflammatory bowel disease. Do not use in patients with iron overload or those receiving IV iron. Monitor iron levels during treatment. Accidental overdose can be dangerous, especially in children.

Overdose Effects:

Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Severe cases may lead to metabolic acidosis and systemic toxicity. Excess iron may accumulate and cause hemosiderosis.

Therapeutic Class:

Oral Iron Preparation

Storage Conditions:

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protect from light, and keep out of reach of children.
