Cefuroxime axetil and clavulanic acid is a potent β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combination used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by resistant strains. Cefuroxime axetil is a second-generation cephalosporin that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, targeting a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. However, many bacteria produce β-lactamase enzymes that can deactivate cefuroxime. The addition of clavulanic acid, a "suicide inhibitor," solves this by binding to and inactivating these enzymes, thereby protecting the cefuroxime from degradation and extending its efficacy against β-lactamase-producing organisms like Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis. This combination is highly effective for treating community-acquired pneumonia, acute otitis media, and complicated urinary tract infections. While generally safe, common side effects include gastrointestinal distress and the potential for hypersensitivity reactions in patients allergic to penicillins.
