Amoxicillin is a moderate-spectrum, semi-synthetic beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the aminopenicillin family, widely utilized for treating various bacterial infections such as otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, and pneumonia. It exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which inhibit the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, ultimately leading to the rupture of the bacterial cell wall. Compared to penicillin, amoxicillin offers better oral absorption and a broader range of activity against Gram-negative pathogens like Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae. However, because it is susceptible to degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes, it is frequently paired with inhibitors like clavulanic acid to overcome bacterial resistance.
