Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum second-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and certain types of infectious diarrhea. It exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes that manage DNA supercoiling and replication; this disruption effectively halts bacterial cell division and leads to cell death. Because of its high bioavailability and tissue penetration, it is effective against many Gram-negative pathogens, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. While highly effective, the FDA has issued warnings regarding serious potential side effects, including tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects, leading to the recommendation that it be reserved for cases where alternative treatment options are not suitable.
