Metoprolol Tartrate is a cardioselective beta1-adrenergic receptor blocker commonly utilized in the management of hypertension, angina pectoris, and acute myocardial infarction. By selectively inhibiting beta1 receptors located primarily in cardiac muscle, it reduces heart rate, cardiac output, and systemic blood pressure, thereby decreasing myocardial oxygen demand. Unlike metoprolol succinate, which is an extended-release formulation designed for once-daily dosing, the tartrate salt is an immediate-release preparation with a shorter half-life, typically requiring multiple daily doses to maintain therapeutic plasma levels. This pharmacological profile makes it particularly useful in acute settings where rapid titration or shorter duration of action is desired. It is lipid-soluble and undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver via the CYP2D6 enzyme pathway.
