Product Description

Indications:Odmon (Montelukast) is indicated for the prophylaxis and long-term treatment of asthma. It is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) and to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including both seasonal and perennial types.Pharmacology:Montelukast is a selective, orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1). Leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4), derived from arachidonic acid, are released from inflammatory cells such as mast cells and eosinophils. These mediators contribute to airway edema, smooth muscle contraction and inflammation, which are key features of asthma and allergic rhinitis. By blocking leukotrienes, Montelukast helps improve airway function and reduce symptoms.Dosage and Administration:For adults and adolescents (15 years and above), the usual dose is Montelukast 10 mg once daily. For children aged 6–14 years, the dose is 5 mg once daily. For children aged 2–5 years, the recommended dose is 4 mg once daily. In children aged 6 months to 5 years, 4 mg oral granules may be given once daily, either directly or mixed with a small amount of cold water or soft food at room temperature. No dosage adjustment is required in elderly patients or in those with mild-to-moderate hepatic or renal impairment.Drug Interactions:Montelukast can be safely used with most medications commonly prescribed for asthma without significant adverse interactions. It does not significantly affect the pharmacokinetics of drugs such as theophylline, prednisone, prednisolone, oral contraceptives, terfenadine, digoxin or warfarin. However, drugs that induce liver enzymes, such as phenobarbital or rifampicin, may reduce Montelukast levels, so clinical monitoring is advised.Contraindications:Montelukast is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components.Side Effects:Common side effects include diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions and upper respiratory tract infections. Less common effects include anxiety, dizziness, drowsiness, joint pain, weakness, sleep disturbances and irritability. Rare but serious effects include angioedema, liver disorders, hallucinations, memory impairment, palpitations, pulmonary eosinophilia and suicidal tendencies.Pregnancy and Lactation:Montelukast should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary, as adequate human studies are lacking. Caution is advised when administering to breastfeeding mothers, as many drugs are excreted in breast milk.Precautions and Warnings:Odmon is not suitable for the treatment of acute asthma attacks or status asthmaticus. Patients should always have a rescue inhaler available. It should not replace inhaled or oral corticosteroids abruptly. It is also not recommended as monotherapy for exercise-induced bronchospasm. Patients with aspirin sensitivity should continue avoiding aspirin and NSAIDs while using Montelukast.Overdose Effects:Most overdose cases do not result in serious adverse effects. Reported symptoms may include abdominal pain, drowsiness, thirst, headache, vomiting and increased activity. In case of overdose, supportive treatment and monitoring should be provided.Therapeutic Class:Leukotriene Receptor AntagonistStorage Conditions:Store in a cool and dry place below 30°C, protect from light and moisture, and keep out of reach of children.⚠️ Always use this medication under the advice of a registered healthcare professional.
