Aceclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the phenylacetic acid class, widely used for the relief of pain and inflammation in conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It acts primarily by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, thereby blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are key mediators of the inflammatory response. Interestingly, aceclofenac is considered to have a preferential inhibitory effect on COX-2, which contributes to its potent anti-inflammatory activity while potentially offering a slightly better gastric tolerability profile compared to traditional non-selective NSAIDs. It also stimulates the synthesis of the extracellular matrix of joint cartilage, making it particularly useful in chronic joint disorders.
